"Like this?" she asked, pricking each string one at a time.

He nodded. "Now kind of meld them together in one long stroke so you know how they sound together."

She nodded, and smiled after doing so. "Look at that, I'm playing an acual guitar."

He grinned. "It gets easier as you play around with it." He paused for a second. "You can take this one to practice if you want. I've got a few others."

"R-really?" Lilian asked, a bit taken aback. "Thanks."

"Haru, Mimi is on the phone..." his mother walked onto the porch and spotted Lilian. She stopped dead in her tracks, taking in the scene. She is sitting to close to my son... "Haru. Come."
He glanced over at Lilian and mouthed the word "sorry" before following his mother inside.

I just realized your location is 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow'

Lilian smiled, knowing how parents were. She continued pricking the strings, bewildered she was holding a real guitar and not some plastic xbox controler.

His father entered the room. "What is going on?"
"Haru has an American girl..." she emphasized American.
"Mama, she is just a friend," he pleaded.
"No, Haru. We have been over this. You cannot and will not date American girls."
His father nodded. "Yes. Mimi is a great young woman. You two will make a great couple."
"But I don't want to date Mimi! Mama, why won't you just let me make my own decisions?! I'm not a little boy anymore!" he felt tears prick his eyes.
"Haru. You know how this family works. It has been like this for generations past, and will stay that way for generations to come. If we have to move away to keep that tradition, we will!" his father's voice echoed through the hollow frame of the house.
His parent's cold, icy stares bore into him. He was defeated.

Lilian was able to hear the entire conversation. I don't want to cause you trouble. she thought, placing the guitar on the steps and riding away.

"I hate you," he said to them. He quietly walked back out. "Lilian..?" he looked at the porch, his guitar laying on the steps. He saw her just as she rounded the corner onto the next street. He sat down and buried his face in his hands.

She wipped at her face as she rode. She knew parents were strict, but not letting them be together because she's American? She wouldn't be able to talk it if her parents decided she couldn't choose who to date.

He left his guitar there and sped up to his room, falling back onto his bed. "I'm so stupid. I love her. Why can't they accept it? They must know that they cannot carry on tradition forever," he growled into his pillow.

When she got home she made sure her parents wouldn't know she'd been crying. She wlalked in confidently, face dry. "Lilian, what's wrong? Why were you crying?" Of course.

His father opened his door. "What? You love that girl?"
"Go away."
"You know this is not righteous. Your grandmother would be disappointed."
He sat up. "Papa, Grandma is in Japan. We are in America. Where Americans live. In fact, I am going to apply for citizenship when I am 18. I am going to become American."
His father clenched his teeth. "No you will not. I will not allow it!"
"What the hell do you have against America, Papa!?" This shut his father up.

"What do you mean?" Lilian asked, "You were crying...was it a boy?" "Mom!" Her father came up from downstairs. "What's this I hear about a boy? Are you seeing someone?" "No!"

"I don't want to lose our family to this... this... disgrace."
"What is disgraceful about it, Papa? You chose to move us here when I was only 9. Do you know how hard it was for me to make friends? To fit in? It's not every day that an American school gets a Japanese boy who knows no English. You chose to come here and leave your own mother behind. You shouldn't be complaining about 'losing me to the disgrace' or dating who I want to."
His father sighed. "What a stubborn boy."
Haru narrowed his eyes. "Considering where I go it from, you mean."
With that, his father went back down the stairs.

"You know dating would get in the way of your education. Even if it is summer break you should be focused on learning all that you can." he said, giving her a stern look. "I know dad." "And no more tv, you need your sleep and it's been distracting you."

He stared at the ceiling, thinking of her. How stupid he was to ever have the least bit of hope that they could be together... Hours passed. He skipped dinner, tears still running down his face. They've ruined my life...
